I was very excited about my reservation at Nobelhart and Schmutzig, and I can say they did not disappoint. The restaurant is very well located, although from the exterior you would never guess the type of restaurant that was inside. I was shown to my seat at the long restaurant bar, and told the waitress that I would like to have Billy (owner and world famous sommelier) pair my meal with wine. Each course was amazing.. but there was a few standouts. The butter from Stettin was unlike anything I have had before... I would smuggle cases of it back to the states if it were practical.... The eel was very well prepared, and the taste of the pork was simply amazing. The wines recommended for each course fit perfectly, the pours were generous, and each was very well described. You can tell the entire staff is passionate about their work, and they love what they do. Some of the courses I enjoyed more than others.... but overall it was great. Do not believe the negative comments about the restaurant... if you have an open mind and you love food, you will have a great evening. It really is more than a dinner, it was a great night out in Berlin.

A visiting friend treated me to dinner here and we were accompanied by her 13-yr old daughter. This place has a take no prisoners approach, which is not for everyone. The overall concept is one of allowing yourself to be taken on a tasting journey with very little room for compromise. That&#39;s already a challenge for most diners but this is not helped by some servers&#39; often brusque, non-smiling and abrupt manner. My friend&#39;s hotel rep originally reserved our corner seats at the open counter for a party of 4. However, my friend requested a day earlier that the hotel change the reservation to party of 3, which was not done. This became a bone of contention for owner/sommelier Billy, who proceeded to lecture my friend on the need to cancel or change a reservation shortly after our second course. Although my friend explained what happened and the hotel&#39;s role in this mistake, Billy continued to condescendingly lecture her and utter false assumptions about where my friend lives. No Billy, she is no ill-mannered greenhorn Yankee but a well traveled global citizen who has gone to fine-dining establishments for years and does know how to cancel a reservation, if she had indeed made it herself. The irony of it was that we sat next to a spot with a baby buggy next to it and the next party of 1 used 3 chairs. I live in Germany so I know that Germans can be a bit too straightforward as Billy pointed out, but this lecture was a bit much. It certainly took away from the overall experience. Food is about pleasure and not feeling like one is paying to be beaten up. It took us a while to get back into mood to enjoy. I think we all liked a lot of what we ate but again we felt like we were held hostage to the whims of a dictator. One problem was the lack of choice with some selected beverage pairings. Special craft beers were chosen for 3 courses. Two too many in our opinion. We would have preferred wine. But how to communicate that?? We were all still recovering from Billy&#39;s assault. H

We got off to a bad start - we asked about beers and were offered only &quot; light or dark?&quot; Took time to discover that in fact they have quite a broad selection of interesting beers - our hostess scowled at us as we perused the list. The 10 course meal that followed was delicious - v interesting variety of tastes and all top quality. some dishes served politely by the chefs themselves. Sommelier was an exuberant fellow who advised on our wine selection. Atmosphere is lacking - hire more gracious hostesses so that we can enjoy the sumptuous food - more smiles and less glares will go a long way towards making this a top restaurant.
